Here is a news report aired in Halifax, Nova Scotia on November 30th, 2017, on the 50th anniversary of the first crash of a Sea King helicopter in the Royal Canadian Navy. The crash occurred north of Bermuda on November 30th, 1967.

 

Voici un reportage diffusé à Halifax, en Nouvelle-Écosse, le 30 novembre 2017, à l'occasion du 50e anniversaire du premier écrasement d'un hélicoptère Sea King de la Marine royale canadienne. L'écrasement s'est produit au nord des Bermudes le 30 novembre 1967.

 

I was the diver on duty onboard destroyer HMCS GATINEAU on the night of the crash. HMCS GATINEAU was the first ship to arrive at the site of the crash. We found two survivors in a liferaft bouncing around in heavy seas. I jumped in the water with a horse collar and swam toward the survivors in an attempt to save the survivors, pilot Lt. Leo Wolfe and co-pilot SLT Brian Roberts. A boat was also lowered over the side to assist in the rescue. The survivors were rescued and were later transferred by jackstay to the aircraft carrier HMCS BONAVENTURE for medical treatments.

J'étais le plongeur de service à bord du destroyer NCSM GATINEAU la nuit de l'écrasement. Le NCSM GATINEAU a été le premier navire à arriver sur les lieux. Nous avons trouvé deux survivants dans un radeau de sauvetage ballotté par une mer démontée. J'ai sauté à l'eau avec un collier de sécurité et j'ai nagé vers eux pour tenter de sauver le pilote, le lieutenant Leo Wolfe, et le copilote, l'en second Brian Roberts. Une embarcation a également été mise à l'eau pour faciliter le sauvetage. Les survivants ont été secourus et transférés par haubans sur le porte-avions NCSM BONAVENTURE pour y recevoir des soins médicaux.

 

Two other crew members perished in the crash. They were Commissioned Officer Clair Tully and Petty Officer First Class Douglas Mander.

 

Deux autres membres d'équipage ont péri dans l'écrasement. Il s'agissait de l'officier commissionné Clair Tully et du maître de première classe Douglas Mander.

 

I was interviewed in the 2017 news report along with shipmate Brian Lapierre who witnessed the rescue onboard aircraft carrier HMCS BONAVENTURE and with Mark Mander, a former Chief of Police of Kentville, Nova Scotia. Mark is the son of Douglas Mander who died in the helicopter accident.

A tour of retired "O" Boats with PO1 Ken Cox in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. We can see HMCS OKANAGAN, HMS OLYMPUS and HMCS OJIBWA. I note that HMCS ONONDAGA is no longer there and HMCS OJIBWA is still there. So it must be between June 2008 and May 2012.

The final voyage of Canadian Submarine HMCS ONONDAGA in 2008. In the first video you can see her being towed up the St. Lawrence River. The next ten videos are news reports between August and December 2008 when she suffered a few mishaps while being hauled out of the water.

A video showing Museum Director Serge Guay at the helm of Canadian Submarine HMCS ONONDAGA in December 2008. The submarine had just been hauled out of the water in Rimouski, Quebec. HMCS ONONDAGA opened as a submarine museum in 2009.

The final voyage of Canadian Submarine HMCS OJIBWA in 2012, from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Port Burwell, Ontario. The next 12 videos cover the preparation in Halifax for the final voyage and the travel up the St. Lawrence River,  up the Seaway and across Lake Ontario. A stopover in Hamilton for a paint job and the final leg of the journey through the Welland Canal and arrival at Port Burwell on Lake Erie. HMCS OJIBWA opened as a submarine museum in 2013.

Le dernier voyage du sous-marin canadien NCSM OJIBWA en 2012, de Halifax (Nouvelle-Écosse) à Port Burwell (Ontario). Video of Canadian Submarine HMCS OKANAGAN on her final voyage in 2011, from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Port Maitland, Ontario. You can see her on a barge going through the locks at Sainte-Catherine, Quebec, on her way to the scrapyard at Port Maitland,Ontario. OKANAGAN looks terrible and battered in this video. It is hard to imagine that we caller her « THE SHOW BOAT » at one time. This is a sad video to watch. After watching this video, you can go to the Table of Content and select the section on Canadian Submarine HMCS OKANAGAN to see photos of the submarine.

DURING THOSE SUBMARINE SCHEDULES, THE SPEED OF MORSE CODE WAS INCREASED FROM 22 TO 100 WORDS PER MINUTE. THIS WAS DONE TO MINIMIZE THE TIME REQUIRED AT PERISCOPE DEPTH TO COPY THE MESSAGES. THE RADIOMAN ONBOARD THE SUBMARINE RECORDED THE 100 WPM MORSE CODE ON A TAPE RECORDER. ONCE THE SCHEDULE WAS OVER, THE SUBMARINE COULD GO DEEP WHILE THE RADIOMAN SLOWED DOWN THE TAPE RECORDER TO 25 WORDS PER MINUTE TO COPY THE MESSAGES.

Canadian submarine HMCS OJIBWA (CZFQ) calling CFH4 on the 8 MHz calling frequency with a submarine check report to be sent on the calling frequency (ZPP). The submarine is also monitoring the CFH naval morse code (CW) broadcast with a good readability (QRK CFH - 4). OJIBWA also has 1 flash message to be sent (ZBO 1 Z) in addition to the submarine check report. Below is the text as well as the sound of the call on morse code.

 

Le sous-marin canadien NCSM OJIBWA (CZFQ) appelle le CFH4 sur la fréquence d'appel de 8 MHz avec un rapport de vérification du sous-marin à être envoyé sur la fréquence d'appel (ZPP). Le sous-marin capte aussi la diffusion naval en code morse (CW) de CFH avec une bonne lisibilité (QRK CFH - 4). L'OJIBWA a également un message flash à envoyer (ZBO 1 Z) en plus du rapport de vérification du sous-marin. Voici le texte ainsi que le son de l'appel en code morse.

One of my favourite morse code scenes at the cinema is in the movie « A NIGHT TO REMEMBER » released in 1958. In the scene, Captain Smith of  RMS TITANIC tells radio sparks Jack Phillips and Harold Bride onboard RMS TITANIC to send the distress call because the ship has struck an iceberg at 2345 and is sinking. The ship SS CALIFORNIAN is only a few miles away but the radio operator Cyril Evans shut down the radio and went to bed 10 minutes earlier at 2335. If only Evans had been awake and listening, all of the RMS TITANIC passengers could have been saved.

L'une de mes scènes de code morse préférées au cinéma est dans le film intitulé « A NIGHT TO REMEMBER » sorti en 1958. Dans la scène, le capitaine Smith du RMS TITANIC demande aux opérateurs radio Jack Phillips et Harold Bride, à bord du RMS TITANIC, de lancer un appel de détresse, car le navire a heurté un iceberg à 23 h 45 et est en train de couler. Another of my favourite morse code scenes at the cinema. Again in the movie « A NIGHT TO REMEMBER » released in 1958. In this scene, Harold Cottam, the radio operator onboard RMS CARPATHIA, decides to have one final listen of radio signals at 0011 before going to bed. This is when he picks up the CQD / SOS signal from RMS TITANIC. He immediately acknowledges receipt of the SOS and runs to wake up the Captain. Unfortunately, RMS CARPATHIA is 58 nautical miles away and RMS TITANIC sinks before RMS CARPATHIA arrives on the scene.

A parade of her Majesty's Naval Reserve in 2003, marching by Prince Charles (now His Majesty King Charles), to the sound of Heart of Oak... They wear the same uniform I wore when I was in the Royal Canadian Navy in the 1960s. It reminds me of the many parades I participated in at HMCS Cornwallis, HMCS Hochelaga and HMCS Naden.

 

Un défilé de la Réserve navale de Sa Majesté en 2003, marchant devant le Prince Charles (aujourd'hui Sa Majesté le Roi Charles), au son de Cœur de chêne… Ils portent le même uniforme que je portais lorsque j'étais dans la Marine royale canadienne dans les années 1960. Cela me rappelle les nombreux défilés auxquels j'ai participé au NCSM Cornwallis, au NCSM Hochelaga et au NCSM Naden.

Video from shipmate CB Mathes who went through basic training from November 1960 to March 1961 at HMCS Cornwallis in Nova Scotia. He was in Kootenay 3/60 Division.
